The Owen Sound City Council candidates expressed their views on various topics on Bayshore Broadcasting News Friday morning.
They spoke about what they felt was the most important issue facing the city in this election campaign, what to do about taxes, how to expand the cities economic base and why they should be voted on to council.
Taxes according to many of the candidates has emerged as the most important issue of this campaign, and while no candidate promised to lower taxes, many stated they would work hard to try and make any increase minimal.
The majority believed there should be a close examination of every city department to see where even more saving can be made.
Several candidates suggested that perhaps some services should be cut back as one way to try and reduce the tax burden.
Other candidates stated building new homes is one way of expanding the tax base, and generating more revenue.
Continued development of the harbour, lower development fees, and amore level playing field for business and industry as far as taxes were some of the ideas put forward to expand the cities economic base.
Several candidates stressed that its important for the city to look at forming partnerships with its neighbouring municipalities as a way of reducing the cost of some services like fire and policing.
15 of the 16 candidates for council were able to take part in the broadcast.
The first advance poll is Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM in the basement boardroom at Owen Sound City Hall.
