Huron-Bruce Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell is defending the McGuinty government’s move to step in at the Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society.
Children and Youth Services Minister Laurel Broten this week announced the appointment of an interim provincial supervisor for the CAS.
That heads off the threatened mid-December closure and no staff will be laid off.
The agency is running a 1.3-million dollar deficit and carrying a debt-load approaching a-million.
Mitchell quotes the figures in defending CAS funding and the way it’s distributed.
She points out that funding for the Huron-Perth Children’s’ Aid Society has increased by 60 per-cent since the Liberals were first elected in 2003 while the caseload has gone up by less than five per-cent.
Mitchell says the province had to step in to make sure society’s most vulnerable citizens are taken care of.
Mitchell tells us provincial intervention was a last resort.
She says the CAS could no longer live within the funding allotment so the government had to move to make sure Children’s’ Aid services were still available.
