Enrolment numbers were down for summer school this year compared to last.
Bluewater Superintendent of Student Success Jean Stephenson says there were thirty students less this past summer than the summer before, but she’s not concerned about it.
Stephenson says summer school has to “self-fund.”
As a result she says if there are not enough students to make a course viable, then courses can be cancelled at the last minute.
She says another reason numbers might be down is that within the school year there is a credit recovery program where if a student misses a credit in the first semester they may be able to pick up in the second semester.
Stephenson says the program results in the summer school program being unnecessary.
She says administration is hard pressed to predict what the demand for summer school might be.
Stephenson says they’re open for any public input that might make summer school better for kids.
Summer school this year was held at OSCVI and the Pine Hill Youth Detention Centre.
112 elementary aged students were enrolled, along with 402 secondary school students.
