There is no plan to end rural main delivery in Georgian Bluffs or in the Shallow Lake area.
That is the assurance from Canada Post spokesperson Andy Patterson who is responding to concerns from Georgian Bluffs Mayor Allan Barfoot.
Patterson says what is happening is that a safety survey of about 73 mailboxes on Highway 6 found there were serious safety concerns surrounding delivering mail at those locations.
He says those boxes cant be moved to a safer location, so the only option is for those customers to begin using the Community mailboxes.
Patterson says 358 rural mail boxes on Highway 6 were tested, and only 73 were locations deemed to be unsafe, and had to be removed.
As for Mayor Barfoot’s concern that the Shallow Lake community centre is not a good location for one of the community mail boxes, Patterson says Canada Post is more than willing to meet with Municipal officials to discuss where they should be placed.
He says they meet individually with each and every customer, and by and large most people who have to move their mail box are understanding about the safety issues.
Patterson hopes to have the community mail boxes set up before the snow flies.
