The sewer controversy in Sauble Beach stole the show but a Chamber of Commerce all-candidates meeting had much more than that.
It was a packed house at the Sauble Beach Community Centre last night and most stayed for the full four hour event.
An all-candidates meeting that featured mayoralty, wards one through four, and public school board candidates.
In all, 29 candidates were on hand while two couldn’t make it.
The sewer project planned for Sauble Beach was an issue that was split among all candidates.
However those that favoured it were definitely not appreciated by those in the crowd.
In the mayoralty category, the record of the past council and what was called the dysfunctional operation of South Bruce Peninsula came up several times.
It was something candidate Len Chabot alluded to saying he feels he would bring a sense of calmness to council meetings.
However he said his biggest priority is to downsize council and to eliminate the ward system–another hot topic at the meeting.
Meanwhile, candidate John Close called on the town to create a strategic plan for the municipality with the electorate being involved.
Candidate Paul Deacon says he would bring a business sense to the mayor’s chair, based on his work, owning a hardware store.
Incumbent Gwen Gilbert told the audience the town has taken giant steps forward during the last four and as a result has set up an exciting four years ahead through downtown revitilization; community planning and the waste management plan which will come together this fall.
Candidate Jim Kerr says he senses people want change from the type of government in the past four years and he runs on a transparent government that communicates with its constituents.
