A two day hearing is underway in Ottawa to look into the plan by Bruce Power to ship 16 — 100 tonne steam generators over to Sweden for recycling.
The company claims they are “low level” radioactive and there is no danger to the public or the environment.
However, dozens of groups have lined up to oppose the project.
John Bennett at the Sierra Club of Canada wonders why Bruce Power wants to do this anyway.
He says it is likely money, and says the health of 40 million people along the Great Lakes will be put at risk, just so Bruce Power can make some money.
Bennett says when an environmental assessment hearing was held in 2005, Bruce Power promised to store the radioactive materials on site.
The Sierra Club of Canada is highly critical of the Canadian Nuclear Safety commissions’ handling of the issue.
He laughs at the supposed “arms length” relationship between CNSC and the government — saying the Harper Conservatives basically tell the commission what to do.
Bennett wants a full environmental assessment of the plan to ship the material overseas.
