A two day hearing is underway in Ottawa today, to look into the plan by Bruce Power to transport old steam generators to Europe for recycling.
There are 79 submissions to the Canadian Nuclear Safety commission, including one from the city of Owen Sound, and one from an opponent of the plan, Sharon Skelly of Owen Sound.
The hearing begins at 1 PM and Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners will make a presentation this evening at 8 PM.
Lovell Stanners says the city has no real option but to approve the overland transport from Bruce Power to the harbour, but she has some real concerns.
The Mayor is worried that the Scenic City will get stuck with a huge bill for road repairs, after the 100 ton generators make there way down city streets, and she is concerned about the cost of extra policing.
The OPP are preparing for possible protests over the shipment, and Lovell Stanners wants either Bruce Power, or the Federal government to foot the bill for policing and any road repairs.
Meanwhile, Sharon Skelly is making her presentation against the transport plan on the Great lakes.
She is worried about a possible impact on peoples lives and the environment when low level radioactive material is shipped thru the Lakes overseas to Sweden.
Skelly claims most of the submissions to the CNSC hearing are opposed to the plan.
