The leader of the Federal NDP is promising to make changes to the long-gun registry.
Jack Layton tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that billions have already been spent on the registry and instead of getting rid of it, the parties need to work together to make positive changes.
At a Huron-Bruce NDP Nomination Meeting recently, Layton said many of his MP’s are giving the registry vote a second thought because of outcry from police officers and emergency medical services.
He says their party has consulted with Canadians all across the country and come up with a few suggestions to improve the registry.
Layton says there should be a grace period for guns that are being passed down through a family, and the criminal aspect should be removed.
The issue will come to a vote as Parliament resumes sitting this week.
