Georgian Bluffs council will donate ten-thousand dollars to last year’s cenotaph restoration project in Owen Sound.
The project restored the ninety year old cenotaph, including a running water feature.
It also upgraded the parkette that surrounds the monument, which is located across the road from the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library.
Although the cenotaph is in Owen Sound, it was designed and commemorated in honour of soldiers who hailed from Owen Sound and the surrounding townships of Derby, Keppel, Sarawak and Sydenham.
Derby, Keppel and Sarawak have since amalgamated into Georgian Bluffs, which gladly pledged its support of the restoration.
Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot says the request of ten-thousand dollars was reasonable, especially for the price paid by local veterans who served our country.
The project cost 115 thousand dollars and took ten weeks to complete in the summer and fall of 2009.
A grant from Veterans Affairs in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars was also used to pay for the necessary work.
The cenotaph was rededicated last November.
Georgian Bluffs also has a cenotaph in Shallow Lake.
A similar Veterans Affairs grant helped pay for a new monument which was unveiled there in June 2009; a replacement for the original cenotaph which was built in 1946.
