Kincardine is working on becoming a healthy community.
The Program Manager, Healthy Communities for the Grey Bruce Health Unit, Susan Shular attended a Kincardine council meeting recently to bring the municipality an update on the concept.
Shular says their purpose was to reiterate that they are available to work with the community to make it even a healthier community.
She says inactivity, poor eating habits and smoking are just a few of the issues that each municipality needs to address with its residents.
Shular says it’s one thing to educate but she asks does the community follow through with action.
For example, if they promote walking as a health activity, is there a safe place to walk in the wintertime with ploughed sidewalks.
Shular acknowledges that Kincardine is on the right track in creating a healthy community.
She says it’s even in the town’s mission statement that calls for great energy and a balanced life.
She says Kincardine has focussed on their aging population at one end of the spectrum and healthy youth programs at the other.
But Shular says the job is never done and that’s why she came to council to keep the message in the forefront.
