The OPP are taking seriously the threat of protests over Bruce Power’s plans to ship radioactive steam generators on the Great Lakes from Owen Sound to Sweden.
The OPP have spent the last two weeks meeting with Bruce Power, local politicians and members of Cargo — the local group opposed to the plan to ship 16 radioactive steam generators from Owen Sound via the Great Lakes to Sweden for recycling.
It’s the same OPP officers who were responsible for organizing security during the G-8 Summit in Huntsville.
According to sources — they want to avoid a Caledonia type demonstration.
Resident Sharen Skelly of the group Cargo tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they assured officers they would only hold peaceful demonstrations, if any at all.
But Blue Mountains Mayor Ellen Anderson says there are other groups from across Ontario that would be prepared to hold massive demonstrations.
The OPP also plan to attend the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission hearing on the proposal on September 29th in Ottawa.
In fact — the hearing will now be held over two days — on September 28th and 29th because the CNSC has received 77 interventions.
The Great Lakes Cities Initiative has also expressed opposition to Bruce Power’s plan.
