The discovery of another rabid skunk in Grey County near Holstein means there will be a special rabies vaccine bait drop in that area later today.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is in the midst of its annual rabies eradication program in Southwestern Ontario.
If you see a yellow MNR plane flying about 500 feet above the ground, it will be dropping vaccine laced bait.
MNR official Beverly Stephenson says as a result of the discovery of that rabid skunk in Grey County — a special flight will be made over that to blanked the area with bait to try and slow down the spread of the disease.
So far this year 8 skunks have tested positive in Grey County for rabies — all in the Holstein and Mount Forest area.
Stephenson says this is the only area in Ontario that has rabid skunks left.
She says almost 700 thousand baits containing rabies vaccine are going to be dropped over southwest Ontario to try and control the spread of rabies in skunks and foxes.
Stephenson says the flavoured baits are small and khaki green and contain a small plastic container with the vaccine and are being dropped in wooded areas throughout the region.
She says exposure to the bait is not harmful to people or pets, but if a person or pet comes in contact with the vaccine in the bait, they should contact a doctor or veterinarian as a precaution.
