It is going to take three weeks to get rid of the non-toxic mould at the Kincardine hospital.
The South Bruce Grey Health Centre has hired a contractor to get rid of the mould found in the south ventilation system of the hospital.
Vice President Brenda Rantz says they will remove the un-insulated air ducting in the 30 year old area of the facility — which includes the E-R, lab, cafeteria and gift shop.
The work will begin today — but Rantz says the E-R will remain open and the lab will stay open for emergency tests.
Rantz says the lab will be closed for outpatient testing until Friday.
Rantz notes the company has specialized equipment that will allow the hospital to keep most services available without any risk to patients or the public.
The gift shop will close on September 20th while the cafeteria will be closed September 22nd — so the air ducting units can be replaced.
The South Bruce Grey Health Centre has also pinpointed the cause of the mould.
Rantz says ongoing construction work — combined with the hot summer — created perfect conditions for the mould to grow in the un-insulated units.
Testing at the hospital also found two additional areas with mould from previous water leaks — a utility room and file room.
Rantz adds once the work is done — they will re-test the air quality to ensure the mould is gone.
