Three walks to raise money and awareness of Parkinsons Disease are taking place this weekend in Grey Bruce.
Saturday will see a fundraising walk take place in Hanover, and there will be two walks Sunday in Harrison Park in Owen Sound and another in Kincardine.
87 different walks are taking place right across the country this weekend with the ultimate goal of raising three million dollars for research.
Lucy Gowers is the local representative of the Parkinsons Society in Grey Bruce and says locally they are hoping to raise more than 50 thousand dollars.
She says the goal for the Owen Sound walk is in the 12 thousand dollar range, while in Hanover they hope to bring in between 30 and 35 thousand dollars and in Kincardine they are hoping to raise about 20 thousand dollars.
Gowers says not only do the walks raise money for vital medical research, they also raise funds to provide support services for victims of the disease and their families as well.
She says Parkinsons affects more than 100 thousand people in Canada, and with the aging baby boomers, the need for services is expected to double by 2016.
