A public meeting is being held tonight at the Owen Sound Legion, to discuss the plan by Bruce Power to transport old steam generators to Europe for recycling.
One of the organizers of the meeting, Sharon Skelly of Owen Sound, claims Bruce Power is not telling the truth about the plan.
She says Bruce Power is dressing up the idea to look like it is a recycling plan, but Skelly says only the steel from the generators will be recycled and the nuclear waste will be coming back to Bruce County.
A small group that opposes the proposal will outline their concerns to residents and will collect signatures from those opposed to it.
The meeting tonight starts at 7 PM at the Owen Sound legion.
Skelly says she will take those signatures to the Owen Sound council meeting on September 13th to try and convince council to block the plan.
Bruce Power wants to transport 16 “slightly radioactive” steam generators from Lake Huron to Owen Sound, where they would be loaded onto ships and taken to Sweden for recycling.
Skelly and others, warn about the possible impact on the environment and residents’ health.
On September 29th, the Canadian Nuclear Safety commission is holding a hearing in Ottawa on the Bruce Power plan.
Skelly will be there and has standing to make a presentation.
