It may be a first for Owen Sound, but it is certainly not a first for Grey Bruce.
Habitat for Humanity along with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have begun building Owen Sound’s first Habitat house, their 25th build in Grey Bruce.
Catherine Lawrence, Director of Affiliate Relations for Habitat, says CMHC employees have so far helped out on every home build in Grey Bruce, a tradition that continues for this latest build.
Construction will be completed just in time for Christmas.
The house will become home to the Dowell Family; Kathryn, Dave, Riley, Bronte, and David, all of who are from Owen Sound.
Families who purchase homes from Habitat for Humanity are selected based on their level of need, willingness to become partners in the Habitat program as well as their ability to pay back the no-interest mortgage.
They must also provide 500 hours of construction labour, or “sweat equity.”
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce was initiated in 1987, it is Canada’s oldest affiliate.
