Owen Sound is home to a world champion dancer.
Daniel Carr has recently returned home from the 2010 Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon, Scotland.
This past weekend Carr won the Highland Dancing World Championship in the adult category.
He was required to compete in four different events – highland fling, sword dance, seann truibhas and reel.
The four dances all have historical significance.
Carr feels it’s important to know and understand the history of the dances when competing as it helps you to appreciate their origin.
He was able to pay his way to Scotland using prize money he had won at various other competitions across North America — including the Canadian Championship.
Carr says he competes most every weekend outside of fall and winter.
He first started dancing at the age of three and has been training ever since.
Carr received all his instruction in Owen Sound at the Sheila Milne School of Dance.
He regards Milne as one of the best teachers in the world and credits her for much of his success.
Carr’s attention is shifting to school now – he attends college in Michigan.
He says he intends to resume training and return to Scotland next year when he will try to win the world championship a second time.
