A 42 year old Owen Sound man will be back in a Sarnia courtoom on September 17th to have a date set for his trial on a charge of first degree murder.
Nine days of preliminary hearing testimony ended Wednesday with the judge ordering him to stand trial.
He is charged in the murder of 70 year old Velma Thomson in October of 1983.
She was found sexually assaulted and stabbed to death at her Petrolia home.
The name of the Owen Sound man is not being released because at the time of the crime he was only 15.
If convicted of first degree murder and sexual assault, the unidentified man could receive life in prison.
However, due to the Youth Justice Act, he could apply for parole in five to seven years.
For years the case was open as OPP followed up leads.
In June of 2008, the suspect was arrested in Owen Sound where he has lived for several years.
Inspector Ian Maule tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, the suspect was a person of interest since 2001 but he had not been questioned by police prior to his arrest in the Scenic City.
He was released on bail in March of 2009.
