The Canadian Red Cross is challenging you to be prepared in case of an emergency.
As part of their disaster relief campaign — the Red Cross gave four people 25 minutes in Walmart to gather items they think their family will need in order to support themselves for 72 hours in the event of an emergency.
Owen Sound Fire Prevention Inspector Greg Nicol participated and one of the first thing he filled his shopping cart with was a battery powered smoke and carbon monoxide detector.
Nicol says a lot of newer homes don’t come equipped with battery powered detectors and they’re key when the powers out.
He also recommends a 760 watt inverter that act’s like a generator and a radio.
Red Cross Community Services Co-ordinator Stephanie Murray says having a least two litres of water per person per day is crucial.
Murray also says its important to have cash at home and a list of your medications if you’re heading to an emergency shelter.
