A group representing some 13 million residents along the Great Lakes, will be in Ottawa September 29th to question officials from Bruce Power.
Chair of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Denis Lapointe, tells Bayshore Broadcasting News he is not happy with the information he has, about a plan to ship old radioactive steam generators overseas.
Bruce Power wants to ship the “slightly” radioactive material out of Owen Sound, thru the Great Lakes and over to Sweden where the material will be recycled.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety commission isn’t satisifed with the plan either and has called the hearing for September 29th.
The Cities Initiative includes 70 Mayors of centres along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence system.
Lapointe says their main concern is the possible impact on the water system or the health of residents.
He says no information has been given about the type of container ship being used or how Bruce Power plans to handle rough weather during the transfer.
