It’s been a banner camping season for the Saugeen Conservation Authority.
All three Conservation campgrounds — the Durham Conservation Area, Saugeen Bluffs and Brucedale — experienced high camping numbers this season.
Manager of Parks Al Leach credits the good weather and adds technology has also played an important role.
Leach says more and more campers are using their computers to check the forecast — and if they see sunshine — they just head out and show up without bothering with advanced reservations.
He says a good camping season is important for the Saugeen Conservation Authority since all of their campgrounds are self sufficient.
This means the campgrounds do not receive any municipal or government funding.
All revenues generated from the campgrounds go back into park operations and are also used towards future park capital projects.
Leach adds this has also been an unusually good summer for camper behavior.
There has only been one incident that required police intervention.
While alcohol is permitted on all three Saugeen campgrounds — it is banned during the May 2-4 long weekend at the Saugeen Bluffs site.
Leach says this ban helps set the tone for the rest of the summer.
