Driving along the beach at Oliphant could soon be just a memory.
A public meeting on the issue is set for tonight at 7 PM in the Oliphant Campers church.
Resources Manager for the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, Geoff Peach, presented a 95 page report to South Bruce Peninsula Council this week, which calls for strict limits on cars on the waterfront.
Peach says with low water levels more and more people are using the beach for recreation and the big problem is their cars are disrupting the eco-system.
He says lower lake levels mean some unique plant life can take hold along the shore, but vehicles disrupt the soil and kill the new plants.
At the same time, Peach says the disturbed soil is good for the Common Reed, which is threatening to take over the beachfront.
His 7 recommendations include one that vehicles be banned from areas west of Shoreline Avenue and Bay Street at Oliphant.
The issue of vehicles on the beach at Oliphant will come back to the regular meeting of South Bruce Peninsula council for discussion.
Peach says the Open House session this Saturday at 7 PM is a chance for the public to get more info.
Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is a non-profit group which was asked by the Friends of Oliphant to look into waterfront conservation.
