It doesn’t look like South Bruce Peninsula will adopt a full bag-tag system for garbage collection.
That according to Waste Management Committee Member Dan Kerr.
Council voted down the proposed change at Committee of the Whole this week — and Kerr believes they will do the same next Tuesday at regular Council.
But he doesn’t understand why.
Kerr says seasonal resident’s and seniors, who don’t make much garbage, are being treated unfairly.
Kerr believes a full bag-tag system would be cheaper then keeping it on the tax roll.
He says putting a bag out every two weeks would cost 39 dollars, where as the current cost — would be more like 300 to 400 dollars, because of the cost of expanding the landfill.
Kerr believes their recycling diversion rates would continue to improve if they made the switch.
When the municipality went from two free bags to one — the amount of tonnes of recycling went up 23 per cent in just the first three months.
Councillor Ana Vukovic is one councillor who’s against the switch — saying the municipality should not tax ratepayers for services and then also charge them.
The decision goes before council this Tuesday night.
Kerr add’s that the user pay system clearly works in other neighbouring municipalities and it would work in theirs as well.
