After learning our ways here in Grey Bruce — it is time for students from Korea to bid farewell.
In a ground breaking english as a second language program at the Bluewater District School Board — 14 students from Korea have been in the area for a few weeks.
The students — ages 10 to 15 — have been touring popular spots like the Keady market and the Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Mary Anne Alton — former director for the board — was one of the organizers of the exchange and says the students have learned a lot from their time here.
Alton says it has also proved to be an environmental experience for the students as most come from urban areas and are not used to green space as we have here in Grey Bruce.
She adds because it is hands on and in our culture the students have been able to pick up the english language much quicker than sitting in a classroom.
Alton says there has been three instructors with the students – and all three have also been in Korea so they know the cultural differences.
There is a graduation ceremony tonight at the outdoor education centre and then the students will head from Grey Bruce and finish off their tour of Canada before returning to Korea in a week.
The students will be visiting Toronto and Niagara Falls before heading stateside.
The program came from a trip that both Alton and Superintendent Jennifer Yennsen made back in February to make a connection with education officials there.
Alton says not only has the program been a success but other delegations are looking into similar programs with the board for next year.
