Saugeen Shores Council is supporting Bruce Power at their Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission public hearing.
Council voted to send a letter backing Bruce Power’s plan to truck 16 decommissioned steam generators through their municipality.
Deputy Mayor Doug Freiburger says the municipality should be doing everything they possibly can to support their largest employer — he feels it’s council’s duty.
Freiburger believes Bruce Power has shown to the public and CNSC that the plan is safe.
The mildly radioactive generators will be trucked through Saugeen Shores, to Owen Sound and then loaded and transported by ship to Sweden.
As for what the resident’s of Saugeen Shores think of the plan, Freiburger says they haven’t heard anything for or against it, but he thinks they would be supportive too.
Critics are worried it may trigger the turning of the iconic waterways into a permanent corridor for the transportation of nuclear waste.
Nearly 24 hundred people and 50 organizations across Canada, USA, and Europe have signed an online petition urging the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to block the shipments.
To address those concerns, the Commission has decided to hold the public hearing, which takes place in Ottawa on September 29th.
