Grey County is asking the federal government to reconsider its decision to discontinue the mandatory long-form census.
County Council has endorsed a recommendation from its planning and community development committee to ask the government to change its mind.
It followed a speech to County Council by Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller, and he still feels the census includes unnecessarily intrusive questions.
Miller says if the number of people who are upset by the government’s decision is as high as the national media suggests — and if all of those people fill out the long form census — then twice as much information would be collected as in previous censuses.
Miller claims he has run into very few people who are upset or see this as a hot button issue.
Southgate Deputy Mayor Brian Milne — who Chairs the Planning Committee — says the information collected on the long-form census is vital for proper planning.
Milne also says he doubts resolutions like the one passed by Grey County will have any effect on the federal government.
But he feels standing up and voicing the county’s feelings on the matter is still the right thing to do.
