It’s a rosy picture for Ontario’s nuclear industry according to a new report released by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters. (CME)
Ian Howcroft is the the Vice President of CME Ontario.
Howcroft says by refurbishing nuclear facilities at Bruce Power in Tiverton, and at Darlington, some 25 thousand new jobs will be created over the next decade.
Howcroft says those include high paying refurbishment jobs for high skilled workers, and support and supply jobs.
He says the refurbishments will boost the Ontario economy by five billion dollars each year annually as well.
Howcroft also says the power itself is greatly needed.
He believes the work at both nuclear facilities will be required to meet our province’s long term energy needs.
The current plan calls for a combined output — at both Bruce and Darlington — of up to ten thousand megawatts of electricity when the refurbishments are complete.
Nuclear power currently produces more than half of the electricity in Ontario.
