Saturday is Food Day across Canada.
Food day is the brain child of author and food activist Anita Stewart and first began 8 years ago during the height of the BSE crisis.
Stewart says under its original banner as the Worlds Longest Barbecue, the event was designed to help support Canada’s Beef farmers by encouraging people to purchase and consumer local beef.
She says this year, she has renamed the event Food Day to reflect our national love affair with all types of food.
Stewart says Food Day is a national celebration of restaurateurs, suppliers, growers, farmers and citizens.
Every year, people list on the Food Day website the menu’s they were preparing for their Saturday meal.
This year Stewart has included dozens of restaurants across the region and country that are preparing special meals composed of local ingredients.
She says now if people don’t want to cook today, they can go to a restaurant that prepares and serves up local food.
In the Grey Bruce area, the Rocky Racoon Cafe in Owen Sound and Gore Bay is on that list.
Stewart says another aspect of Food Day is the innovation area chefs use to create and serve up new and different types of food.
For example, she says Mushroom expert Bill Wiley and Rocky Racoon Cafe owner Robin Pradham have created a apple based desert wine infused with mushrooms.
Stewart says this desert type wine is excellent and Pradham and Wiley are developing it to sell in the Chinese market place.
