Georgian Bluffs has received a certificate of approval from the Ministry of the Environment to expand its Hepworth-area landfill by recontouring the site.
The approval will give the township an additional 15 thousand cubic metres at the site, extending the life of the facility by at least five years and as many as 10.
Without the recontouring — according to Councillor Tom Wiley — the landfill only has about a year left before it’s filled.
Wiley is the Chair of the Township’s Environmental Committee.
Wiley says they have the approval because the municipality successfully completed a waste management master plan to the satisfaction of the province.
The plan included a new bag-tag policy and the purchase of an eco-shredder that chops garbage, wood products and anything not made of metal down to about a fifth of its original size.
Wiley says the municipality is also continuing with efforts to educate the public about the importance and benefits of recycling.
