Bruce Power received a low-key reception from Georgian Bluffs Council.
The nuclear operator talked about its plan for the decommissioned steam generators from Units 1 and 2 at Bruce A.
Manager of Community and Government Relations Ross Lamont detailed the company’s plan to ship 16 100-tonne generators to Sweden.
They would be trucked through Grey and Bruce counties and putt aboard a ship in Owen Sound Harbour.
It’s the same presentation Lamont has been delivering for the Council of local municipalities through which the shipments will travel.
In Georgian Bluffs, the generators will be shipped along Highway 21 from Alvanley to Jackson, south along Grey Road 3, then east through Kilsyth and Mennonite Corners to Rockford. Then they will go north along Highway 6 and 10 to Owen Sound.
Lamont was asked a few questions by Georgian Bluffs Council that were different than Owen Sound Council.
And while Owen Sound Mayor’s has publicly declared her non-support for the idea, Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot spoke in favour of the plan.
Barfoot says he welcomed Bruce Power’s visit to Council and he appreciates the information being given by the company.
He’s sure residents will be wondering and calling while the generators are being trucked through the township, and councillors and staff will now be able to give details to anyone who calls.
Lamont says as more information gets out there about the project, people who might first have been against it are coming around and realizing there is little danger or risk.
Lamont understands why other councils may not be as concerned as Owen Sound — noting the city’s harbour will be used and not just its streets.
Lamont says he has also had preliminary discussions with the chiefs of police of Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores regarding police escorts of each generator shipment and security at the harbour as the generators.
