Members of the Canadian Cancer Society Bluewater Unit will be getting a special visit today.
The newly appointed CEO of the Ontario Division Canadian Cancer Society will be meeting with staff and volunteers in Owen Sound.
This is part of Martin Kabat’s efforts to get out and meet the people who deal with cancer patients and survivors on a daily basis.
He says his vision as the new CEO is to increase the survival rates even more for cancer patients.
Kabat says cancer is no longer a automatic death sentence as it was decades ago and more and more people are successfully battling and living with the disease.
He says today the survival rate for individuals stands at 62 per cent and he wants to push that up by at least another one per cent.
Kabat says that would mean they would save another 17 hundred lives a year in Canada.
He says thanks to fundraising efforts by the Bluewater Unit of the Cancer Society, and others they are able to direct massive amounts of money towards research, which in turn is making remarkable progress in finding better more effective treatment.
Kabat will be at the Bluewater Units office from 11 AM until 1 PM Tuesday to meet unit workers and volunteers.
