Youth Programs Coordinator for Saugeen Shores Business Enterprise Centre Ginny Henry says the three successful applicants receive 15 hundred dollars start-up money.
And then at the end of the summer if they meet all the requirements, they get another 15 hundred dollars from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.
17 year old James Lindsay of Southampton is starting up “Funky Phresh Beats”–a techno recording studio; 18 year old Shawn MacEachern has started Lake Huron Cottage Maintenance and 20 year old Nichole Barnard of Mildmay is providing some independent equestrian training and coaching.
Henry says the Business Enterprise Centre had over 20 applicants but it was only three that completed the business plan process.
As these students run their own business with the potential to earn and learn, they will be mentored by local volunteer business people.
A 2008 survey shows that 22 per cent of the business started by students through Summer Company are still running.
