A complete overhaul of the South Bruce-Grey Health Centre board will see some big changes, while reducing its size.
SBGHC CEO Paul Davies says they’ll reduce the board from 21 Directors to 11.
At the same time, he says those on the board will be chosen based on skill sets, like human resources, legal, or accounting.
Davies says members will also be chosen to reflect the demographics of our community – like First Nations people and women.
But the changes also mean employees of the corporation, or anyone who can benefit from a position on the board, will not have voting priveleges.
Davies says this likely won’t increase the transparency of the board, but he says that’s not something that needs to happen anyway.
He says hospitals are private corporations, and there is no legal requirement to be transparent to the public.
Davies says it’s not an issue though, because most of the decisions the board makes are made in the public anyway.
Davies believes the biggest challenge will be selecting board members who have the necessary skill sets, because the field has been narrowed, and can’t include those working for the hospital corporation.
But he says that expertise will still be present at the board meetings, just without voting priveleges.
Davies is confident they will have a strong board nonetheless.
