MPP Murdoch announces retirement
OWEN SUOND – Local MPP Bill Murdoch announced today in Owen Sound his intentions to retire from politics in October 2011.
After 33 years in public office, including 21 years as an MPP and 12 years on municipal council, Murdoch says he is ready to hang up his hat and let others step up to the plate.
“Its time to move on. I want to give the candidates a chance to establish their name in the community and get organized for the next general election,” said Murdoch, adding he will not be endorsing any candidates at this time.
He also said he would stay active in the community after his retirement.
“Ill still have my farm to run, Ill still belong to the local service clubs, and Ill still be outspoken. I just wont be going to Queens Park anymore,” he said.
Murdoch was first elected in 1990. He has served under all three political stripes, including Bob Raes NDP, Mike Harris Conservatives and Dalton McGuintys Liberals.
He has also sat as the Ontario Legislatures only independent member in 2008-09.
“Whats made it worthwhile for me was always the small things. Its always been about the positive feedback and the thank-yous I hear when Im out and about, Murdoch said. Its these little things that have made my job that much more enjoyable over the last 20 years.”
