A math teacher from John Diefenbaker Secondary School in Hanover is being honoured.
And it’s one of the highest achievements a math teacher can receive.
Henry Mengers is the recipient of the University of Waterloo’s Descartes Medal.
The award recognizes an individual who has established a record of excellence of teaching mathematics and who’s contribution has gone beyond the classroom.
JDSS Principal Mark Ozario notes Mengers has been teaching math for 33 years — and has been involved with EQAO testing at the provincial level.
Mengers has also provided several math workshops and training sessions for other teachers.
Mengers calls the award humbling and something he never expected.
Mengers says it’s an added bonus that the award comes from his old school — the University of Waterloo.
Mengers says his passion for math has made his teaching career fulfilling.
He is also pleased with the curriculum changes that are taking place in mathematics.
His advice to students, don’t give up too easily — and perseverance in math is key.
