Not much to celebrate on Canada Day for many Bayshore Broadcasting News listeners.
Many are upset over the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax today and the fact a lot of items they consider essential now will be subject to an additional 8 per cent tax.
That will bring the total tax on such goods as gasoline, heating fuel and electricity up to 13 per cent from the current level of 5 per cent.
Callers to Bayshore Broadcasting News say those items are necessities especially for people who live in rural or remote areas.
One caller says she can’t hop on a bus or subway to get to town to buy food — she has to drive her car.
Several callers stated they were on fixed incomes and having to pay more for these essential services will have a negative impact on their lifestyle.
Another caller stated she felt this was just another tax grab by the Provincial Government.
