It’s a big weekend for a Port Elgin man.
Tony Alberts is in Ottawa to receive the Officers Medal in the Order of St. John.
That ceremony is today on Parliament Hill.
Alberts is being honoured for his volunteer service with St. John Ambulance, where he currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Grey Bruce Board.
Earlier this month, he received a twelve year service medal and a commendation from the provincial chaptoer of St. John’s at Queen’s Park in Toronto.
Alberts says he started volunteering because he wanted to give something back to the community after receiving hours of health and safety training through his workplace at Bruce Power.
He says there are two ways others can feel as fulfilled as he is.
Volunteers are always needed to attend special events and offer first aid medical response through St. John Ambulance.
The other way is through the Therapy Dog Program, whereby the volunteer brings a trained animal into senior’s homes.
Alberts calls the honour humbling — and plans to continue volunteering for as long as he can.
