You’ll have plenty of opportunity this summer to learn about the culture and ways of life of the Ojibway natives through several programs at Saugeen First Nation.
Spokesperson Priscilla Yellowhead Tobey is back in the region and this year is presenting the traditional feasts and the cultural camp, as she has done before.
However new this year is the women’s self discovery camp.
Tobey says the traditional feasts will be held at the Ampitheatre grounds pretty well each Thursday.
There were be five feasts in July and two more in August.
All start at 5:30 PM, weather permitting.
Tobey says it’s an opportunity to sample traditional native food and enjoy the outdoors of the native gardens on the reserve.
She says she’ll also be conducting the annual Cultural Camp for everyone interested from July 6th to 9th and 13th to the 16th.
Among the activities are crafts, nature hikes and cultural folklore.
Tobey says there’s something new this year as well.
It’s a women’s self-discovery camp for those 18 and older.
The camp will accomodate only 15 people who will spend a few days at Saugeen First Nation and a couple of nights on Manitoulin Island as well.
Again time will be spent re-visiting native culture and a way of living.
