South Bruce Peninsula is concerned about the effect the new Harmonized Sales Tax will have on the municipality.
Council has approved a motion to send a letter to the Province asking them to re-assess the HST.
Councillor Mark Wunderlich — who introduced the motion — says the government didn’t really let anyone know that gas was going to include another 8 per cent per litre.
Wunderlich says they need to address that because he predicts it will affect tourism to the area.
He says they are not going to ask the McGuinty government to stop it but to reconsider it.
Wunderlich says Ontario needs to work its way through the final stage of the recession before implementing it.
The motion passed by a vote of 4 to 3.
Councillor Dan Kerr — who voted against the motion — notes since the program is beginning in less than a week, it’s a little slow off the mark.
Kerr says the only thing the letter will do is irritate the Province.
The HST will begin on July 1st, 2010.
