The words summer school normally make students cringe — but the Bluewater District School Board is doing what it can to change that.
Hugh Morrison is the Vice Principal of Grey Highlands Secondary School — but is also the Vice Principal of Summer School for the board this year.
Summer school this year for the board is being held at OSCVI in Owen Sound.
Morrison says summer school has evolved over the years and is not just for students that did not gain a credit over the school year.
Morrison says many students are now attending summer school to fast track their education especially with the competition being fierce for post secondary education.
He adds another popular aspect now offered at summer school is for elementary students is for power reading to help with their english skills — a math booster camp for enhancing math skills — and the bridge to success program to help prepare students for highschool.
There is also summer school co-op placement program to help students learn on the job.
Morrison says the energy in summer school is very positive as it is fast paced and many times the teachers show a lot of creativity to their classes to help students absorb the curriculum as quickly and effectively as possible.
Morrison says it only take 11 days now to upgrade a course and about 5 weeks for a new credit.
There is still the cost of text books and busing for students in many cases, although the courses for most of the elementary students are completely government funded.
