There are more questions than answers with regards to Bruce Power’s plans to use Owen Sound to send 16 steam generators to Sweden.
The nuclear company still needs approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission — and that would include consultation with First Nations.
Plus Owen Sound Council must also approve the plan and the City’s Mayor has serious concerns about the proposal.
Ruth Lovell Stanners says her vision of the harbour does not include the storage of sixteen, 100-tonne generators emitting low level radiation with an armed guard.
Lovell Stanners also doesn’t know whether the City’s streets and traffic can handle the 100-tonne loads.
City Staff must prepare a report for Council to see which roads would be available.
Lovell Stanners says any future conversation with Bruce Power will be made infront of Council in a public meeting so all of the information is out in the open.
Bruce Power is still working on plans to ensure the generators wouldn’t be stored at the harbour for a long period of time before being shipped overseas for recycling.
As part of the 37 million dollar contract with a Swedish firm — the generators would be stored at the harbour in September before setting sail in October.
The steam generators are currently stored in a concrete storage facility.
