Saugeen Shores is taking another step forward in the battle against wind turbines.
Deputy Mayor Doug Freiburger introduced a motion Monday that calls for Council to consider a bylaw to block future wind farm developments based on health and safety concerns.
Freiburger says the bylaw will be based on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms because no one should have the right to do anything that makes someone ill.
He says it will fairly mirror the bylaw recently passed in Arran Elderslie which he was also involved in drafting and knows a lot of research went into to.
Chatsworth has also passed a similar bylaw and other municipalities are considering the move as well.
Freiburger recognizes these bylaws may be tough to enforce, but says this is more about sending a message to Queen’s Park.
He says with the Green Energy Act the province has taken away the rights of municipalities and residents as far as their ability to comment on what they feel is honestly good for their community or home.
He also says people are suffering real health problems due to wind turbines but the province seems to be ignoring that.
Freiburger stresses that Saugeen Shores is not against green energy projects but wants to promote their use in a responsible manner.
The previously approved wind turbine on the CAW lands would be exempt from the proposed bylaw.
The Committee of the Whole will discuss the bylaw at their next meeting on Monday June 28th.
