OPP are again warning motorists that they will be fined if they’re caught using a hand-held cellphone or texting while driving.
The provincial distracted driving legislation came into effect last fall but police didn’t start issuing tickets until February 1st.
A clearly frustrated Huron OPP Constable JoAnna Van Mierlo says police have had enough with those who continue to violate the distracted driving law.
Van Mierlo says it’s difficult to understand why drivers feel they have to talk on their hand-held cell while driving.
She says OPP continue their crackdown on the use of hand-held devices and that they will hand out fines of 155 dollars without prior warnings.
Van Mierlo says she and her OPP colleagues get the impression motorists are not taking the law seriously.
Van Mierlo says it’s almost as if many drivers are openly thumbing their nose at the distracted driving law.
Van Mierlo says as long as the current attitude among drivers continues, police will respond with an automatic fine.
Van Mierlo says other distractions don’t come under the new law but you can still be fined.
She says actions like applying make-up, eating or reading a book while driving will still bring a fine under the Highway Traffic Act section that covers careless driving.
