Some special visitors today at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.
Associate Chief Justice Dennis O’Connor will come back to Walkerton at 1 PM for the official opening of the Clean Water Centre.
O’Connor led the inquiry into Canada’s worst case of water contamination.
His report ruled the disaster in May 2000 — which claimed the lives of 7 people and made thousands of people ill — could have been prevented by proper chlorination.
Four years after the tragedy — the Clean Water Centre was established.
Now in a new home, the Centre is considered a world class facility with state of the art technology to train and educate operators of drinking water systems.
O’Connor will be joined by Environment Minister John Gerretsen and Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell at today’s ceremony.
But not everyone is celebrating.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch is miffed that he was not invited to today’s ceremony.
Even though Walkerton is not in his riding, Murdoch feels he is ‘local enough’ to have been invited.
And Murdoch notes it was the Conservative government that established the Clean Water Centre in Walkerton.
Murdoch instead attended the P-C Rural Caucus meeting in Wingham.
The public will be invited to tour the multi million dollar facility during an open house this Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM.
