Yellow bicycles are about to become all the rage in South Bruce Peninsula.
The municipality is launching a new initiative called the Yellow Bike Community Bike Program.
Residents and visitors alike can now sign out a bike, almost like a library book, and take it for a spin around Wiarton or Sauble Beach.
Mark Klunder is a technology teacher at Peninsula Shores District School.
His students are a key part of the program and have helped gather 8 bicycles and make them ready for the road.
They had to assess the bikes, write a work order, then make the necessary repairs, and apply a coat of bright yellow paint.
Klunder says it’s been a great project for the kids because they got to work on their hands on mechanic skills while contributing to the community.
Klunder says this summer will be a test run for the borrowing program.
The community bicycles will be available at the Tourism Office at Bluewater Park where you’ll need to sign a waiver and take out a helmet.
When you’re done with the bike you simply return it to the office.
Klunder says the program promotes healthy living and will encourage residents to think of taking a bicycle instead of a car when they need to run some errands.
He also says visitors can now take advantage of a fun way to see the area.
