Staff at the Kincardine Hospital and Bruce Power are well-equipped to handle any incident involving contamination.
A mock “Code Brown” was completed at the hospital last week.
Brenda Rantz — the Vice President of Corporate Development and Labour Relations at the South Bruce-Grey Health Centre — says a Code Brown is any incident that includes chemical, nuclear, biological, or environmental contamination.
The scenario for this mock code included a Bruce Power worker who had a contaminated piece of metal stuck in his arm from an incident in Reactor A.
The hospital was put on alert, and the nursing and environmental teams responded to contain the treatment area.
Rantz says overall, the scenario went exceedingly well.
She says there is some new staff at both the hospital and Bruce Power so they felt it was a good time to review this scenario.
Rantz says even though these events rarely occur in real life, the hospital does this type of training at least once a year.
The Kincardine hospital has had the decontamination room for about 12 years, and Rantz says they’ve never actually had to use it for a contamination case.
She says the one case they handled in that room was a heart attack.
