The Bluewater District School Board is moving quickly to install the Specialist High Skills Major program in every high school in the district.
Liz Campbell is involved in the program and says it is up and running in eight different highschools and offers nine different programs for grade 11 and 12 students.
She says the board’s goal is to have the program operational in every high school by the fall of this year and have the programs designed to meet the needs of the community and students.
Campbell says this program allows the Grade 11 and 12 students to specialize in a specific sector of the work place and allows them to see if in fact this is a career they want to pursue
She says students at Chesley High School involved in the Agriculture High Skills Major program will get advanced standing when they apply for an agricultural program at the University of Guelph and wont have to take one first year course because of the work they have done while still in High School.
Campbell says Georgian Bay Secondary In Meaford has applied for a Special Skills Major in Arts and Culture.
Walkerton District Secondary School will see the establishment of a resource management program while John Diefenbaker High School in Hanover will get one in information and communication technology.
