The Rotary Accessible playground in Southampton has another 30 thousand dollars in the bank.
On Thursday — Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was on hand at a special ceremony at the site of the regional playground in Jubilee Park to announce the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.
Chair of the playground fundraising committee Mini Jacques, says the grant moves them to within 10 thousand dollars of their 350 thousand dollar goal.
With the cement foundations now in, next on the agenda is the actual installation of the accessible playground equipment, followed by the rubber fibre surfacing.
In mid-June landscaping will be done, followed by irrigation, in time for the grand opening of the playground on Monday, June 28th.
Meanwhile, Southampton Rotary Club member and playground committee member Tony Sheard says their joint effort with the Port Elgin Rotary Club is really starting to take shape, but they’re not finished yet.
Besides the 50 thousand dollar commitment from the two clubs — Rotarians will be out in the next few weeks with paint brushes in hand to refurbish the picnic shelter on site.
In addition, a Southampton oldtimers hockey club has volunteered to put on a new roof on the shelter as well.
The Rotary Accessible Playground will allow all children with disabilities to come and play and have fun.
Also in the plan is the addition of a sensory garden; creation of accessible parking and making the washrooms accessible as well.
