The Ontario government isn’t leaving as big of a lump of coal in Kincardine’s Christmas stocking as originally thought.
Originally, the municipality was going to lose 621 thousand dollars in Ontario Municipal Partnership funding.
But Mayor Larry Kraemer says they just found out they’ll only lose 400 thousand.
The Mayor says Merry Christmas to Kincardine — they’ve gained 221 “grand.”
Kraemer says the province realizes phasing the cuts in is a better approach, noting taking it away all at once was difficult to swallow for the affected municipalities.
The reprieve on losing the funding means the 1.2 million dollar loss in revenue the municipality was predicting for 2010 will not be quite as severe to deal with at budget time.
Council has also voted to carry over 77 thousand dollars worth of spending for projects that were to be completed in 2009 but did not get done.
Those include the closure plan for the ward one landfill site, and a new bridge on the municipal trail system.
Kraemer says they’ve arrived at the year-end and they’re simply carrying over the financing so they can be paid for in 2010.
