There may be some movement in the First Nations land claim on the Bruce Peninsula, particularly the Sauble Beach land claim.
During a recent budget session — CAO Rhonda Cook asked for a 40 thousand dollar increase in the legal budget to 100 thousand.
Cook says the town’s solicitor has advised that there may be movement in the Sauble Beach land claim with First Nations during 2011.
Cook points out she was not privy to conversations of a few years ago and don’t know how they played out.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee said as far back as 2006 the Sauble Beach land claim was close to a conclusion.
At that time it was suggested a final solution could include a large portion of Sauble Beach being part of Saugeen First Nation along with a financial payment as part of the claim.
Saugeen First Nation filed a claim dating back to 1994 and involves thousands of acres of land, lakes and roads.
The lawsuit, which affects several municipalities along the Bruce Peninsula, plus the senior levels of government is worth 94 billion dollars, according to Cook.
